Glasgow Merchant
City
Glasgow Merchant City is one of the oldest areas of Glasgow.
The Merchant City is in the heart of Glasgow City Centre, seconds from
Glasgow’s busy shopping precincts, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street.
The Merchant City has seen a remarkable rebirth and Glasgow’s architecturally
stunning and vibrant Merchant City is where you will find fantastic fashion
shops, artists galleries and some of the best bars, clubs and restaurants.
In the Merchant city you will find a few hidden gems, such as the Britannia
Panopticon Music Hall where Stan Laurel made his debut, the magnificent
18th century St. Andrew’s in the Square , the City Halls and the
Old Fruitmarket.
In years gone by the Merchant city was an area of rose gardens where the
dog and bird markets, bowling greens and places of entertainment could
be found. The likes of Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde entertained here,
the suffragette, Harriet Beecher Stowe demonstrated and Temperance activist
Carrie Nation campaigned here.
For an oasis of stately architecture, laid back shopping, dining and cultural
pursuits take a trip to the Merchant City.
