Glasgow Rangers
FC were founded in 1873 and Rangers are one of two famous Glasgow football
clubs – the other being Celtic FC. ]They are sometimes referred
to as Glasgow Rangers, although the word Glasgow does not form part of
the club's official title. Rangers are nicknamed The Gers, Teddy Bears
and the Light Blues. And their home ground is Ibrox Stadium at Ibrox in
the south-west of Glasgow.
Ibrox Stadium has a capacity of 51,082 and Rangers play in the Scottish
Premier League.
Rangers have won 51 domestic league titles, more than any other team.
They have won the Scottish Cup 32 times and the Scottish League Cup 25
making them Scotland's most successful club. In 1961 Rangers were the
first British team to compete in a European final when they reached the
final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. They won the European Cup Winners'
Cup in 1972.
Rangers won the Scottish League Cup in May 2009.
In January 2007, it was announced that former manager Walter Smith was the new manager of Rangers, with Ally McCoist as assistant manager and Kenny McDowall as first-team coach. The Chairman is Sir David Murray.
For most of their history, Rangers have enjoyed a fierce rivalry with their cross-city opponents Celtic and the two are collectively known as the Old Firm.
