Fossil Grove at Victoria Park is the oldest tourist attraction in Glasgow.
Fossil Grove is a 350 million year old geological formation consisting
of the stumps and roots of trees which were growing at that time. It was
discovered by accident in 1887 during the construction of a pathway through
a disused quarry at the western end of the park.
The fossil is now designated a site of Special Scientific Interest.
There are interpretative displays. The Fossil Grove exhibit is open in
summer only 12 noon - 5pm.
Visitors are able to view the remains of the fossilised forest from 1st
April until 30th September each year.
Victoria Park itself was opened to the public in 1886, the year of Queen
Victoria's Golden Jubilee
The park has a vast quantity of open parkland including a pond, walks and
orienteering trails with benches to sit and relax to take in views of
the city.
Located in the west end of the city Victoria Park is not far from the
Argyll hotel and well worth a visit.
