The Western Infirmary, which is on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow’s West End and within minutes walk of the Argyll Hotel accommodates most of the acute emergency and receiving functions serving the west of the city of Glasgow-accident and emergency, intensive care, orthopaedic trauma, emergency surgery, acute medicine and acute stroke.
The hospital also provides elective gastrointestinal, breast and cardiothoracic surgery. Medical specialties include cardiology (coronary care, invasive and non-invasive cardiac investigation, and angioplasty), general medicine, and renal medicine (including renal transplantation).
The Western Infirmary is a teaching hospital and there is also a Maggie’s centre at the hospital to help cancer patients, as well as the Glasgow Clinical Research Facility.
The Western Infirmary originally opened as a voluntary hospital relying upon donations and bequests from members of the public but in 1948 with the introduction of the National Health Service the Western came under the management of the Glasgow Western Hospitals Board of Management
As part of Greater Glasgow’s Acute Services Review services will be transferred to expanded facilities at Gartnavel General Hospital and in 2013 the Western Infirmary will be shut down.
The Western Infirmary is within a short walk of the Argyll Hotel and the hotel accommodates many of the families attending the hospital.
